Wingstop Q3 FY26 earnings preview: openings slow, prices hold
Written ahead of Wingstop's Q3 FY26 results on Oct 28, 2026. Q3 data runs through September 28 and Q4-to-date data through October 14, 2026.
Store-level data on every US Wingstop points to the fewest US openings since early 2024. Wingstop took almost no new menu price, and its national wing deal came back only at the end of the quarter, on Thursdays. Reaching the 15–16% unit-growth guide needs a record fourth quarter, and Q4 has started slower than last year.

Key insights
Each insight is supported by the exhibits linked to it below. "E" marks a String estimate.
- 1US openings slowed to 56–60 in Q3, down 36–40% from a year ago.
Two independent String measures agree. String's US unit count shows 2,784 open restaurants at quarter end, 56 more than the 2,728 Wingstop reported for Q2; at the end of Q2 the same count matched Wingstop's figure within one store. String's openings measure shows 60. Wingstop opened 94 US restaurants in Q3 last year and 75 in Q2 this year. US restaurant growth slows to 11% year over year, from 13% in Q2 and 18% a year ago. Exhibits 1–3
- 2The 15–16% unit guide needs a record Q4 of roughly 165–205 openings, and Q4 has started slower than last year.
International isn't accelerating to close the gap. In the ten international markets where String dates openings, Q3 openings matched Q2 at 13, which points to about 30 international openings in the quarter. With our US estimate, Q3 systemwide openings come to about 85–90, so Q4 needs roughly 165–205, 30–60% above Wingstop's best quarter to date (129 in Q2 FY25). That is 13–16 openings a week. Through Oct 14 Q4 has run at about 5 a week: 10 US openings against 13 over the same days last year, and 2 dated international openings. If Q4 kept running at 77% of last year's pace, US openings would reach about 66 and the system about 110, even if international matched its best recent quarter. Building permits show 19 more US sites under way, but only nine of them point to this quarter. Exhibits 14, 17
- 3Wingstop took almost no new menu price in Q3.
Same-store core-menu prices rose 0.1% between the first and last weeks of the quarter. Only 4.9% of stores raised prices, most of them in the last two weeks and by about 2% on average; the increases clustered among franchisees in Ohio, Utah and Idaho. Against a year earlier, the same items cost about 1.7% more at the 19 stores we can compare, the same as in Q2, so price is not what moves comps toward the guide. Q4 so far is flat too: 0.0% through Oct 12. Exhibits 8–9
- 4The national value push came back only at the end of the quarter, and only on Thursdays.
Management said 30 wings for $30 lifted average first-party ticket by nearly 17% in Q2. In Q3 it ran all week only in the July 4 week. It came back on Sep 9 as a one-day-a-week deal, every Thursday through Dec 31 under Wingstop's published terms, so Q3 had four deal days after July. A year earlier the value comparison was stronger: 28 of 31 store menus we sampled from May to August 2025 priced 20 classic wings at $20. The guide implies second-half comps of roughly −4% to 0%, against −8.1% in the first half, and the Q3 menu shows little to drive that. Exhibits 10–11
- 5The deepest discount on the menu now sits behind the Club Wingstop login.
At 89 of the 106 stores we sampled, members pay 70¢ a boneless wing on Mondays and Tuesdays, 42% below the median regular price of a 10-piece. All 17 California stores in our sample charge 80¢. On Thursday Oct 15, a deal day, the boneless option of 30 for $30 was offered online only to members, although Wingstop's terms don't say so. Two 3-piece flavor samplers are member-only, and members get new flavors days before everyone else. Value in Q4 is being steered to members rather than offered to everyone. Exhibit 15
- 6On DoorDash, Wingstop is quick and usually in the “Fastest near you” row.
From 42 addresses near Wingstop restaurants, Wingstop quoted under 30 minutes at 38, with a median of 24 minutes, and made DoorDash's “Fastest near you” row at 24, first at 15. No restaurant in any row quoted more than 26 minutes, and Wingstop never made the row when it quoted more. Against peers within 1.5 miles, it beat Popeyes, Raising Cane's and Buffalo Wild Wings and trailed KFC and Chick-fil-A. Exhibit 16
- 7The core group bundle now costs 24% more, while the menu says it feeds more people.
The same 20-boneless meal deal went from $16.99, labeled "feeds 2–3", to $20.99, labeled "feeds 4". That lowers the menu's price per person, in line with management's "value per person" message, but raises the check. Exhibit 12
- 8The under-$5 entry menu was cut back by 80% in August.
The "$5 Flavor Cravings" menu, which appears to be the under-$5 test Raymond James asked about on the Q2 call, ran in about 160 stores in four regions: the San Antonio area, greater Philadelphia (with South Jersey and Delaware), the Detroit area and Utah's Wasatch Front. By Aug 10 it remained only in the Detroit area and at one Pennsylvania store. A $6.99 lunch-combo test continues in 288 stores, most in Illinois, Florida, Nevada and Indiana. Exhibit 13
- 9A new limited-time flavor will be live on the call date, with Club members first.
Wingstop announced SOUR PATCH KIDS Wicked Punch on Oct 13: Club members get it from Oct 23 and participating US stores from Oct 27 to Nov 5. It follows the Lemon Pepper Trio, which reached members on Sep 10 and stores nationwide on Sep 15 and runs to Nov 11. Both launches gave members early access, in line with steering value through Club Wingstop. Exhibit 14

Comps framing
| Domestic SSS | Q1 | Q2 | Q3 | Q4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FY26 | −8.7% | −7.5% | ? | ? |
| FY25 (lap) | +0.5% | −1.9% | −5.6% | −5.8% |
| Two-year stack | −8.2% | −9.4% | ? | ? |
The full-year guide of −4% to −6% implies a second-half average of about −4% to 0%, using a simple average of quarters. Holding Q2's two-year stack (−9.4%) would give about −3.8% in Q3 and −3.6% in Q4. That puts the full year near −5.9%, at the weak end of the guide.
We don't measure sales directly. Menu prices add under 2 points year over year (about +1.7% at 19 sampled stores, as in Q2), the menu data shows almost no new pricing during Q3, and the national deal returned only in the final weeks, on Thursdays. Any improvement beyond the easier comparison looks weighted to Q4.
We tested our consumer-demand and app-engagement data against Wingstop's comps since 2016. One consumer-demand series has called the direction of the quarter-to-quarter change correctly about 70% of the time out of sample. A change in how that series is collected affects its current reading, so we are not putting a Q3 number on it.
What it means for Q4 and the guidance
Wingstop reports Q3 on Oct 28, before the open. This is what String's data shows about the quarter it will guide on, through Oct 14, about two and a half weeks into fiscal Q4 (Sep 27 – Dec 26).
| Item | Q4 so far | Context |
|---|---|---|
| US openings | 10 | 13 over the same days of Q4 FY25, which ended with 86 on the same count (81 net reported) |
| International openings, dated markets | 2 | Romford (UK) and Bang Yai (Thailand); one more new listing in Indonesia with no date |
| Openings scheduled before Dec 26 | 18 US · 3 international | Half of US stores appear two weeks or less before opening, so this is a floor |
| Pace needed for the unit guide | 13–16 a week | About 5 a week so far, across the system |
| Core-menu price change | 0.0% | Since the quarter began; 23 of 2,793 stores raised prices by more than 0.5%. About +2.1% against a year earlier at 14 sampled stores |
| 30 for $30 | Thursdays | Every Thursday to Dec 31 under Wingstop's terms; 9 stores' menus also list Sundays; all week in the July 4 week |
| Club Wingstop | 70¢ boneless, Mon–Tue | 80¢ in California; Watch Party Bundle punch card for members, Sep 24 – Oct 21 |
| Limited-time flavors | Lemon Pepper Trio; Wicked Punch | Trio nationwide Sep 15 – Nov 11 (members from Sep 10); Wicked Punch for members from Oct 23, participating US stores Oct 27 – Nov 5 |
The unit guide is the main risk our data shows. Holding 15–16% growth needs about 165–205 net openings in Q4, or 13–16 a week. Q4 has opened at about 5 a week. If Q4 kept running at 77% of last year's pace (10 openings against 13 at this point; last year finished at 86), US openings would reach about 66. If the gap stayed at three stores instead, about 83. Add 43 international openings, its best recent quarter, and the system gets to about 110–125. The visible US pipeline, 18 stores, does not yet show the back-loaded quarter the guide needs.
Q4 comps rest on discounts, not price. Q4 laps −5.8%. Menu prices are flat, the deal management credited with a nearly 17% ticket lift in Q2 now runs one day a week, and the deepest discount is for Club members. That points to traffic-led comps with pressure on ticket. Wicked Punch and the members-only promotions will be live on the call date, so expect management to point to them.

Permits see about six months ahead. Across 102 openings since late 2023 in the jurisdictions we cover, the first building permit naming Wingstop came a median 187 days before the store opened. Wingstop's own store list gives about two weeks of notice. Permits point to 19 sites not yet on that list: 4 due this quarter, 5 past their usual opening date (three of them, in Orlando, Baton Rouge and Greensboro, show signs of opening soon), and 10 due in the first half of FY27. That is at most about nine Q4 openings in the areas we cover, which held about one in seven US openings over the past year. Scaled up, that fits a US quarter well short of the 123–164 US openings the guide implies, consistent with our pace estimate.
1 · US openings slowed to 56–60 in Q3
String's US unit panel covers every Wingstop restaurant in the US. Its quarterly openings measure has tracked the company's reported figures closely.
Where Q3 openings landed. String's 60 Q3 openings span 26 states, led by California (6), Florida (5), Pennsylvania (5), New York (4) and South Carolina (4).
The slowdown is broad. Monthly US openings were 18, 16 and 26 in July, August and September (through the 26th). Over the same dates a year earlier they were 29, 28 and 34. Last-twelve-month US openings drop from 317 at Q2 to about 280 at Q3. On the Q2 call, management cited more than 300.
How reliable is the estimate? At the end of Q2, String's unit count was within one store of Wingstop's reported figure. Late-quarter openings can shift between quarters, which is why the two String measures differ (56 vs 60) and why we show a range.
2 · The unit guide now needs a record Q4
Wingstop ended FY25 with 3,056 restaurants. Growth of 15–16% means 458–489 net new restaurants in FY26. The first half delivered 199, which leaves 259–290 for the second half.
| Opening within | Start of Q3 (Jun 30) | Start of Q4 (Sep 28) |
|---|---|---|
| 30 days | 4 | 12 |
| 60 days | 5 | 17 |
| 90 days | 5 | 19 |
| Any future date | 6 | 22 |
The ramp is starting, from a low base. The US pipeline visible for Q4 is three to four times what was visible entering Q3. That fits management's call for Q4 to be the largest quarter of openings.
The gap is large. Most US stores enter String's pipeline only about two weeks before they open, so it can't confirm a 165–205 quarter this early.
International: holding pace, not accelerating
String's international unit panel covers 15 markets. In the ten where String tracks openings, Q3 openings were flat with the first half.
| Market | Open | Not open | Q3 openings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mexico | 143 | 0 | n/a |

Where Q3 international openings came from. Six were in the UK (Rushmere, Inverness, Luton, Fort Kinnaird, High Wycombe and Bournemouth) and two in Bangkok. France (Plan de Campagne), Italy (Milan), Spain (Barcelona), Singapore and Sydney each added one. The UK now has 103 open restaurants, in line with management's comment that it has passed 100.
What it means for the guide. International openings of about 30 in Q3 match the first-half pace (30 and 27), so international is not making up for the slower US. It keeps the record international year management expects within reach: 2025 had 111 international openings, and after about 87 through Q3, Q4 needs roughly 25. International has cleared that in three of the last four quarters.
3 · Almost no new menu pricing in Q3
String's menu price panel covers every regular menu item at the 2,709 US stores present all quarter. Deal, test and limited-time items are excluded.
| State | Stores raising | Share of state | Avg increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ohio | 34 of 91 | 37% | 2.0% |
| Utah | 31 of 34 | 91% | 2.1% |
| Idaho | 10 of 11 | 91% | 1.4% |

| All other states | 31 of 2,242 | 1.4% | n/a |
| Total | 133 of 2,709 | 4.9% | ~2% |
No national increase on the core menu. The biggest US markets held prices: Texas (5 of 485 stores raised), California (1 of 467) and Illinois (3 of 135). Utah and Idaho repriced almost store for store, which suggests a small number of franchise groups moving together.
What this means for ticket. New pricing added almost nothing to ticket during Q3, so any sequential ticket growth has to come from mix and attachment, such as bundles and group orders. The national price changes in Q3 hit only deal and limited-time items: the 20-boneless bundle (Exhibit 12) and a $0.10 increase on the Chamoy Ranch dip.
Against last year, price adds under 2 points. For 19 stores we can compare with their own menus from Jul 1 – Sep 23, 2025, core-menu prices are up a median 1.7% (10 classic wings +1.5%, 10 boneless 0%, fries +3.3%, ranch 0%), and no store is lower. Q2 was also +1.7% (17 stores), and Q4 to date is +2.1% (14 stores). The sample is small, but it points the same way as the panel: comps have to recover through transactions, not price.
4 · The value push arrived late, and for one day a week

Ten weeks without a national wing deal. After the July 4 week, the cheapest way to buy 30 classic wings reverted to a median of $37.99 in every week from Jul 6 to Sep 7. The deal management credited with a nearly 17% ticket lift was absent for most of the quarter. The Watch Party Bundle ($27.99, 20 classic wings with fries and ranch, labeled as feeding 4) was the main new national group offer, rolled out Aug 24 – Sep 1 ahead of the NFL season. Two themed 20-boneless bundles also ran for three weeks in July.
The deal is back, but for one day a week. Through Oct 12, 30 for $30 was on the menu at 2,796 stores, on Thursdays (9 stores' menus also listed Sundays), and Wingstop's terms run it every Thursday to Dec 31. The deepest regular discount is now for Club members: boneless wings at 70¢ on Mondays and Tuesdays (section 7). How the narrower deal performs against Q2's all-week version is the first read on the second-half value plan.
5 · The group bundle got pricier as it was relabeled
The contents never changed: 20 boneless wings in up to four flavors, a large fry and two dips.
| From | Menu name | Menu says | Median price | Price per person |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jun 29 | Boneless Meal Deal For 2 | Feeds 2–3 | $16.99 | $6.80 |
| Jul 20 | Boneless Meal Deal For 2 | Feeds 2–3 | $19.99 | $8.00 |
| Aug 26 | Boneless Meal Deal | Feeds 4 | $19.99 | $5.00 |
| Sep 14 | Boneless Meal Deal | Feeds 4 | $20.99 | $5.25 |
Price per person goes down while the check goes up. The Jul 20 increase ($3 at the median store) hit all 2,715 stores that carried the bundle the week before, so it was a national decision; a further $1 increase reached 1,875 stores on Sep 14. The relabel five weeks later lowered the menu's price per person by 38% while the price stayed at $19.99. It fits the H2 messaging shift to value per person, and it raises the check for guests who order the same bundle.
6 · The under-$5 menu test was cut back
On the Q2 call, Raymond James analyst Brian Vaccaro asked about a "$5 and under" tastings menu he understood was being tested "in three or four different cities." Our data shows where it ran, what it cost, and when it was pulled.
| Test market | Stores, Aug 3 | Stores, Sep 22 |

| San Antonio area and South Texas | 42 | 0 |

Items and prices. 4 Classic wings $4.99, 4 Boneless $3.99, Crispy Tender Sandwich $4.99, 2 Crispy Tenders $3.99, Louisiana Voodoo Fries $4.49 and 5-piece Cajun Fried Corn $3.49. In the weeks of Jul 19 and Jul 26, most test stores charged more for some items (4 Classic $5.69, 4 Boneless $4.99, Voodoo Fries $4.99, Cajun Corn $3.79) and less for 2 Crispy Tenders ($2.79). By Aug 3 all had reverted.
Lunch combos continue. Separately, lunch combos ($6.99 boneless or tender) run in 288 stores, most in Illinois (87), Florida (36), Nevada (32) and Indiana (20). Both tests target the single-diner entry price points management discussed. The group bundles are the offers that went national.
7 · The deepest discount now sits behind the Club Wingstop login
Member-only items and prices at 106 stores across every US region, read on the evening of Oct 14.

| Kansas City BBQ and Lemon Pepper Trio, 3 pieces | Any day | $2.29–$5.99 | member-only samplers | nearly all |
Value is being steered to members. The Monday–Tuesday boneless price is 42% below the regular 10-piece, deeper than the public Thursday deal, which takes about 21% off 30 classic wings ($30 against $37.99). Wingstop's own offer terms require members to be logged in for it. The Thursday deal is advertised to everyone, but on its Oct 15 deal day only member menus offered the boneless version online; classic and mix-and-match were open to all. Management says loyalty is nearly half of first-party digital sales, so members-only pricing is likely to come up as a driver of Q4 transactions, and of ticket pressure.
8 · On DoorDash, Wingstop is quick and usually in the fastest row

| In “Fastest near you” | 24 of 42 |
| First in the row | 15 |

| Popeyes | 13 | 25 | 27 |
| Raising Cane's | 9 | 24 | 27 |

Speed sets a ceiling, not the order. No restaurant in any “Fastest near you” row quoted more than 26 minutes, and Wingstop never made the row when it quoted more. Quoting less wasn't enough everywhere: in Los Angeles, Chicago and Phoenix, Wingstop quoted 22–25 minutes and missed rows that included slower restaurants. McDonald's appeared in 14 rows and Taco Bell in 12; most other places in the row showed up at only one or two addresses.
Read it as a level, not a trend. This is one evening, and every address sits near a Wingstop, which favors it against peers further away.
Method and disclosures
- US restaurants and openings. String's US unit panel tracks every Wingstop restaurant in the US daily. Counts are open restaurants, and quarterly openings follow Wingstop's fiscal calendar. The panel has tracked Wingstop's reported US net openings within five restaurants in each of the last seven quarters, and its end-of-Q2 count was within one store of the reported figure. Estimate ranges reflect those past gaps and the chance that late-quarter openings shift between quarters.
- International restaurants. String's international unit panel covers 15 markets: Mexico, Indonesia, the UK, the UAE, Singapore, Canada, Puerto Rico, France, Australia, Thailand, Spain, South Korea, Ireland, Italy and the Netherlands. Openings are tracked in ten of them. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Colombia and Panama are not covered.
- Menu prices. String's menu price panel covers every regular menu item at every US store, weekly. The same-store price change compares each item at each store with its own price at the start of the quarter. Year-over-year prices compare the same stores' carryout menus a year apart for a basket of 10 classic wings, 10 boneless wings, regular fries and regular ranch; 19 stores have both years for Q3, 17 for Q2 and 14 for Q4 to date.
- Building permits. Public building-permit records that name Wingstop, in jurisdictions covering about 30% of US Wingstop restaurants, matched to restaurants by address. Owner, applicant and contractor details are not used.
- Club Wingstop. Member-only items and prices from each store's member menu at 106 stores across all four US census regions, on Oct 14. Deal terms from Wingstop's published offers page.
- DoorDash. DoorDash's quoted delivery time and its “Fastest near you” row at 42 addresses, each within about a mile of a Wingstop restaurant, in every US region, on the evening of Oct 14. Peer comparisons use the location DoorDash shows for each chain.
- Company figures come from Wingstop's earnings releases for Q3 FY25 (Nov 4, 2025), Q4 FY25 (Feb 18, 2026), Q1 FY26 (Apr 29, 2026) and Q2 FY26 (Jul 29, 2026), the Q2 FY26 conference call, and press releases of Sep 22 and Oct 13, 2026. Wingstop counts US territories as international; our US figures do the same.
- Not covered: same-store sales, transactions, digital mix, loyalty enrollment, commodity costs, and the five international markets listed above.
