Terms of service

1. Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old and able to form a binding contract.

If you use the Services on behalf of an organization, you represent that you have authority to bind that organization and that “you” refers to the organization.

2. Services Overview

String provides infrastructure and software for:

• Dataset delivery - web-data collection, change-detection, and large-scale data-collection pipelines, delivered as structured datasets to your chosen destination (e.g., Snowflake, cloud storage, signed URLs, dashboards).
• Web Access API - a pass-through API for accessing and structuring publicly available web data, in which you direct each request and the API executes it subject to our acceptable use policy and access controls.
• Real-time monitoring and streaming - low-latency monitoring of public websites, delivered over customer-provisioned channels such as WebSocket streams, webhooks, and email.
• Customer portal and self-serve tools - configurable schema generation, credit-based usage, and client dashboards.

The Services are designed to collect publicly available web data - information accessible to any member of the public without login credentials, payment, or circumvention of technical access controls - and transform it into structured datasets, analytics, and dashboards for authorized clients. Our Security Overview describes the security model of each product surface and our Web Data Collection Policy.

You are solely responsible for ensuring that your use of the Services, and your use of data obtained through the Services, complies with all applicable laws and regulations.

3. Account Registration & Access

You may need to create an account and provide accurate, complete information.

You are responsible for safeguarding your credentials and for all activity under your account. We do not store customer passwords; portal authentication is delegated to our identity provider.

String reserves the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

4. License, Use Rights & Acceptable Use

Subject to these Terms and any applicable Order Form, String grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to access and use the Services solely for your internal business purposes.

You may not:

• reverse-engineer or copy our software or data-collection infrastructure;
• resell, sublicense, or redistribute data obtained through the Services without written permission;
• use the Services to access sources that require payment or login credentials, or to circumvent technical access controls, except as the Services are designed to operate under our acceptable use policy;
• direct the Services at destination categories that are restricted under our acceptable use policy without prior approval;
• use the Services for unlawful, fraudulent, or competitive purposes, or in a manner that unlawfully interferes with third-party systems.

For the Web Access API, you control the targets of each request: you are responsible for your own lawful use of the requests you direct and the results you receive, and String acts as a service provider executing those requests on your behalf. Some destination categories are restricted by default and require approval before access. Where a destination presents a CAPTCHA challenge, the Service may solve it automatically to complete your request; you can disable CAPTCHA solving per request or account-wide, and String may disable it for specific destinations.

Publicly available web pages processed through the Services may incidentally contain personal information their publishers have made public; our Privacy Policy describes how such information is handled and the rights of the individuals concerned.

5. Data Ownership & Intellectual Property

All technology, software, algorithms, and data-processing methodologies remain the exclusive property of String.

You retain ownership of datasets you upload or provide to us for enrichment. We do not use the request URLs you direct or the content returned to you to train machine-learning models.

Data delivered through the Services is licensed, not sold, and may be used only within the scope defined in your contract or subscription plan.

Any derivative works or analyses you create using String data belong to you, provided they do not expose the raw or source data.

6. Payment & Credits

Payments are processed by our third-party payment processor, Stripe, Inc.; usage may be billed via credits, subscription tiers, or enterprise contracts.

You agree to pay all fees in accordance with your pricing schedule or order form.

Late payments may result in suspension of access.

All fees are non-refundable, except as required by law or expressly stated otherwise.

7. Confidentiality & Data Security

Each party agrees to protect the other's confidential information with at least reasonable care.

String implements industry-standard security measures - including encryption of customer data at rest (provider-managed AES-256) and in transit (TLS, with TLS 1.2 or higher enforced on our API and public web endpoints), least-privilege access controls, and audit logging - as described in our Security Overview, but cannot guarantee absolute security.

You are responsible for securing your credentials and downstream systems.

8. Compliance & Data Protection

You must comply with all applicable laws in your use of the Services and of data obtained through them, including:

• the U.S. Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA);
• the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA);
• the EU and U.K. GDPR, the CCPA/CPRA, and other applicable data-protection laws.

Our own collection practices are governed by our Web Data Collection Policy and acceptable use policy (see the Security Overview). For enterprise customers, a Data Processing Agreement governing our processing of personal data on your behalf is available on request.

String reserves the right to disable access if your use may expose us or others to liability.

9. Third-Party Services

The Services may integrate with or deliver to third-party platforms (e.g., Google Cloud, AWS, Snowflake, Looker Studio).

Your use of such integrations is governed by the respective third-party terms, and String is not responsible for their actions or data handling. The sub-processors we use to provide the Services are listed in our Security Overview and maintained as they change.

10. Conflicts Between Agreements

If you have a separate signed Data License, Trial Agreement, or Master Services Agreement (MSA) with String, those terms control to the extent they conflict with these Terms.

11. Disclaimer of Warranties

The Services are provided “as is” and “as available.”

String makes no warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability, or non-infringement.

12. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law:

• String will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages; and
• our total liability under these Terms will not exceed the fees paid by you in the 12 months preceding the claim.

13. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless String and its officers, directors, employees, and affiliates from any claims or damages arising from:

• your use of the Services,
• your breach of these Terms, or
• your violation of any law or third-party rights.

14. Termination

Either party may terminate for convenience with 30 days' notice (unless otherwise specified by contract).

String may suspend or terminate access immediately if you breach these Terms or if required by law.

Upon termination, all rights granted to you cease, and you must stop using and delete all String-provided data unless otherwise authorized.

15. Dispute Resolution & Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware and the United States, without regard to conflict-of-laws principles.

Any disputes will be resolved exclusively in the state or federal courts located in New York, NY, and each party consents to that jurisdiction.

16. Modifications

We may update these Terms from time to time.

If we make material changes, we will provide notice (e.g., via email or in-app notification).

Your continued use of the Services after such notice constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
