Overview

Howdy! Bruce here - Chief of Staff at String. I have a product that converts at ~90% once we get a customer to trial. If you want to be a killer BDR who can build our outbound system and get this product in front of as many companies as possible, I want you to join our team.

At String, we’re building the complete layer for companies to collect, structure, and receive web data. As a company, we’ve hit 7-figure ARR, growing over 2x this year by selling to everyone, from individual devs I meet on X to some of the most powerful financial institutions on the planet ($1T+ AUM). We’ve done it all with a lean team of < 10 and only one initial funding round.

In July, we launched our Web Access API, which allows companies to fetch, search, crawl, map, and browse nearly any site on the internet. In ~2 months from launch, that product reached six figures ARR, then it grew by 2.5x the month after. We have a ~90%+ conversion rate from trial → purchase, and a ~95% retention rate.

I want to get it in front of more people and companies. I want you to help us do it.

This role will own building out our outbound motion from scratch for the Web Access API product. You will be in charge of creating pipeline. For the right person, this role can grow into a Growth lead role as we scale. You will have three responsibilities:

  1. Strategize: Segment prospects and develop outreach strategies for each group.
  2. Experiment: Implement those strategies, measure their success, and adjust! We want to try a variety of different approaches and double down on the ones that work.
  3. Hunt: We need to be contacting hundreds of potential customers a week. I need a hustler who wants to build great pipeline, make calls, send emails, and collect quota.

If this resonates, and you are AI-native, technical, hungry, have developed an outbound strategy at an early-stage startup before and can speak to measurable success that you’ve achieved, I want to talk to you.

What we do

Today, any business that wants to collect web data has to jump through tons of hoops:

  1. Build infrastructure to send thousands of requests to websites
  2. Build technology to avoid getting detected as a bot (very hard to do at scale)
  3. Code individual scripts for every website they want to scrape
  4. Fix all those scripts as websites change, and
  5. Ensure consistent data quality across runs

We solve all of these problems so that they never have to worry about their web data pipelines. Thus, we 1) significantly improve their end products driving millions in revenue and 2) save them hundreds of thousands of dollars in engineering costs.

We cut our teeth working with hedge funds (6 of the top 10 in AUM are customers) and VC firms (names you’d recognize but I cannot disclose) and are now taking our learnings from working with them to build data solutions for every firm that needs public web data for their product.

Our end customers use our product to

  1. Make better decisions. E.g., “How much is Lululemon discounting their products and should I therefore buy their stock?”
  2. Fundamentally support their core products. E.g., I’m an AI legal tech company and need to scrape tons of legal codes across state & local government websites.

What you will do

  1. Source pipeline. 70% of your quota will come from this, but Rohit and I need our calendars filled with customers to close. You’ll do whatever it takes to make that happen.
  2. Systematize our outbound motion for the Web Access API - you will come into an unstructured environment and structure it. It will be messy, you will make it less so.
  3. Create a mix of automated and high-touch personalized sales motions. We want to go wide, but we also want to go deep.
  4. Lead. As we scale, we’ll need someone to lead growth for this product. That could be you.

Who we’re looking for

We’re willing to bet on slope if you can demonstrate a high level of competence or hunger. We have a few must-haves, and the rest is flexible if you rock.

You do have:

  1. Experience sourcing five, six, or seven-figure deals
  2. Experience building successful outbound systems
  3. An NYC home base (or the willingness to move)
  4. Some data or technical experience (Python, Go, Typescript, working with APIs). This is not about expertise, but our product / customers are technical. You’ll need to understand them.

You likely have

  1. Experience in a sales role at a early/growth stage startup
  2. Experience selling into our ICPs or buyer profiles (head of data, investment analyst, founder)
  3. Some kind of technical background

Our application is structured in a way that allows you to demonstrate these things rather than just tell us about them. If you copy and paste AI-generated text into the application, I’ll know, and I will throw it in the slopcan :)

Why you’d join us

It isn’t often that a startup is hiring their first sales employee after already generating 7 figures in ARR. We are in the initial stages of PMF and have by far the best product in the market (the vast majority of our customers have switched from competitors).

The bottleneck now is just getting it in front of buyers. For the right person, this will be an opportunity for immense career growth. I truly believe that this role will transform your career and give you the badge to go on to whatever you want to do next.

We believe you’ll have the skills to be a 10x asset to any startup you join in the future - the type of person that hot startups want to bring in as their first Head of Sales

We’ve also structured our compensation to include generous quota, accelerants and equity to ensure we get the best talent. Other benefits include:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Flexible PTO
  • Free food in office - breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • NYC office - beautiful office in Midtown, snacks, drinks, whatever you need
  • Unlimited tokens for AI tooling
  • Annual international offsite (last 3 years - Marrakech, Istanbul, Kuala Lumpur - we like an adventure!)

Interview process

  1. Initial conversation with Bruce (30 mins)
  2. Conversation with Rohit (30 mins)
  3. Work exercise with Bruce (1 hour)
  4. Work trial in person with full team (1 day)

Values & team

You should read through our team values to see if working with us will be a good fit for you. If you get excited from reading the values page, it’s likely a good fit and vice versa.

Logan (CTO): Leading engineering and has extensive web scraping & AI experience. Ships like a 10 person engineering team (Rohit bragging for him). Previously worked as the founding engineer at Nourish (YC W21, now unicorn) and as a software engineer at C3 AI. Has arbitraged Polymarket, frontran ICOs & Coinbase listings, and written a chess engine.

Rohit (CEO): Leading GTM and has signed 25+ deals including 6 of the 10 largest hedge funds while spending half his time coding. Previously worked as a consultant at Bain and cofounded two startups in college, one of them with Logan called CampusOven.

Bruce (CoS): Joined from Bain to help supercharge the ops function and grow adoption of our industry-leading Web Access product. Also worked with us during our CampusOven days.

Engineers: We have 7 more great engineers on the team who help build and maintain the full end to end product. We’re lucky to have such passionate and thoughtful engineers on the team.

Growth interns: We have two rockstar interns on the team right now who have already sourced billion-dollar companies and publicly traded enterprises, they’ll be able to help you out!

Compensation

We’re building an exceptional team and so want to be generous on compensation. Our philosophy is that base compensation is for living expenses and equity is for upside. We want you to be able to give your all and benefit proportionately from your contributions, without worrying about living expenses.

We know that part of the excitement of joining a startup is the upside and to feel like an owner - that’s why we left our corporate jobs.

More concrete information:

  • $90K base
  • $100K commission (uncapped and comes with accelerants)
  • 0.1% equity
  • We are flexible here based on experience and desired mix of cash, equity, and commission
